Modeling & GIS

WMC provides river engineering and stream restoration expertise for the hydraulic design of bridges, culverts, dykes, diversions and hydraulic structures. WMC is a leader in the application of hydrodynamic models for river engineering and flood hazard mapping. We use highly complex modeling and analysis programs to verify the engineering needs of various types of projects. Services that are required to manage river engineering work include:

  • 2-dimensional modeling
  • Unsteady-state flow simulation
  • Water surface profile analysis
  • Modeling of wind set-up
  • Dam breach analysis

Projects that demonstrate our dam rehabilitation services include the following:

Title:  St Vincent Highway hydrodynamic modeling study
Location:  Minnesota, USA
Client:

Minnesota Department of Transportation

Description:

WMC carried out a hydrodynamic modeling study of the effects of raising the St Vincent Highway. The work included set up of the MIKE 11 hydrodynamic model, simulation of alternative highway grades and assessment of impacts on upstream and downstream water levels. WMC also designed waterway openings for mitigation of flood levels including bridges and culverts. The results were presented at a public meeting in St Vincent, Minnesota.

Title:  Fraser River sediment transport modeling
Location:  British Columbia, Canada
Client:

City of Chilliwack and British Columbia Ministry of Environment, Lands and Parks

Description:

WMC developed a MIKE 11 hydrodynamic sediment transport model of the Fraser River in the vicinity of the confluence of the Fraser River and Harrison River, to simulate morphological changes including bed scour and gravel aggradation. Alternative configurations for stream restoration were investigated to determine whether the river would scour a deeper and wider channel and thus reduce design flood levels in the vicinity of the City of Chilliwack. The scope of work included GIS mapping of the confluence area, a geomorphological assessment of bank erosion over time and an environmental assessment.

Title:  Flood hazard mapping for the Skeena River at Terrace
Location:  British Columbia, Canada
Client:

City of Terrace

Description:

WMC was retained by the City of Terrace to prepare flood hazard mapping for floodplain areas within the city. The scope of work included setting up a MIKE 11 hydrodynamic model and determining depths of flooding, erosion rates and potential avulsion paths. A hazard evaluation rating was prepared for floodplain zones and a color-coded flood hazard map prepared. Appropriate development guidelines for each hazard area were recommended.
