WMC geochemistry group newsletter |
| |
The WMC geochemistry group has grown significantly in the last couple of years, requiring some form of trans-office communication to keep everyone aware of issues, project, events and people. So, early this year information was gathered from “members” and the first geochemistry newsletter was sent out to the geochemists and a few others. By popular demand, this newsletter is now being distributed to all WMC & SWS staff, and SLB Geochemistry Special Interest Group members. Click on image to view.
The purpose of this newsletter is to communicate some basic information about who we are and what we have been doing. As WMC, this has focused on inorganic, low-temperature, aqueous geochemistry and water-rock interaction, with practical application mostly in the mining industry. However, as we integrate with Schlumberger Water Services, our focus will necessarily evolve and expand. I would love to hear from you about what you are doing and how we can work together going forward.
Contact Brent Johnson bjohnson@watermc.com for more information, or if you want to include something specific in the next issue. |

Northwest Mining Conference, Spokane Washington |
| |
Peter Dolph (Denver) and Jim Arden (Reno) attended the 113th Annual Meeting from December 3-7th. The event was attended by over 1000 delegates. SWS/WMC had a booth and met with many of the delegates. Some worthy of note included managers from Hecla, Barrick, Newmont, NovaGold, Freeport McMoRan, General Moly, Tech Cominco, US Gold, and Kinross. Many of the participants were interested in the new Schlumberger Water Services booth and wanted to learn more about the recent acquisition. Handouts included WMC mining brochures, SWS services and product catalogs along with DIVERS and Westbay instruments information. Many new opportunities were identified and follow up meetings and discussions will be completed in the next few weeks.

WMC runs Geoscience training course for the Environment Agency, UK
| |
In order to improve the level of knowledge of geoscientists within the organization and to address the shortage of trained hydrogeologists, the Environment Agency of England and Wales is setting up a diploma course in geoscience. The course will be run under the umbrella of the University of the West of England, and academic credit points are to be awarded for each module successfully passed by the course participants. WMC has been involved since the early planning stages of this project, and has been responsible for the following:
- Designing the outline syllabus for the whole diploma course, that consists of ten modules.
- Preparing and delivering the first module, on Basic groundwater hydraulics.
- Developing the detailed specifications for the next three modules, on aquifer characterization, conceptual modeling, and borehole construction.
For each module, full training materials are being prepared, including PowerPoint presentations for lectures, handouts, background reading, case studies, practical exercises and assignments, and module handbooks.

WMC expands Perth office |
| |
In July/August 2006 Mark Anderson relocated from our Shrewsbury UK to Perth Australia office. Mark is a Principal of WMC and is the director responsible for company activities outside North America. Mark returns to Australia after 23 years, taking with him the experience of working within the industry in over 20 countries, in particular in South America, where he established our operations in the early 1990s, and in Africa where he has worked on numerous developments.

| Our aim is to expand WMC’s presence in Australia and the Asian region where some of the most exciting developments in the mining industry are in progress, for example, the proposed expansion of the Olympic Dam mine. Enhancement of our capability will enable us to provide a more comprehensive service to our clients worldwide, and is partly in response to the needs of our existing clients who have consolidated some of their technical and management functions in Perth. |
