Modeling & GIS

WMC has worked worldwide on many types of energy projects related to oil and gas, coal, and uranium. Our expertise in groundwater and surface water hydrology assessments, environmental management and complex model development has allowed WMC to help natural resource development companies meet permitting requirements and operational water management goals.  Our services in Energy include:

  • Baseline hydrological assessments
  • Regulatory support and compliance
  • Feasibility study support
  • Water management of well-field operations
  • Water resource and supply assessments
  • Groundwater evaluation for in-situ uranium production
  • Well-field optimization
  • Coal mining operation support
  • Passive treatment and natural attenuation systems
  • Community development support
  • Database management and GIS
  • Reclamation and remediation
  • Water discharge engineering and permitting

Project Examples:

Title:  Collom pit hydrologic assessment
Location:  Colorado, USA
Client:  Kennecott
Description:  WMC conducted a hydrology and hydrogeology program at this proposed new open pit coal mine to obtain information for the pre-feasibility study and baseline environmental monitoring. Extensive field testing was conducted to define the site hydrogeology, design dewatering and slope depressurization measures, and obtain information for a regional groundwater model. The model will be used to evaluate other potential mining targets in the area and to provide predictions of impacts for permitting.

Title:

Hydro-geochemistry of in-situ uranium leaching:

An Integrated Approach to Management of Solution Mining: a presentation by WMC

Location:  Denver, Colorado, USA
Client:  Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration ( SME) Conference 2007
Description:

In February 2007, at the SME Conference, Shlomo Orr and Aberra Getahun of WMC gave a presentation on the Hydro-geochemistry of in-situ uranium leaching.   In-situ leaching is a complex, multidisciplinary process. It is the intersection between and integration of geology (geochemistry, mineralogy, structural geology), hydrology (hydrogeology, well hydraulics), metallurgy (hydrometallurgy, electrochemistry, aqueous chemistry), and economics (mineral ore, cost of operations, market).  The management of this complex system requires “smart” knowledge integration, flexible modeling and continual optimization. The resulting “expert system” ultimately leads to an integrated, real-time, hierarchical management/control system.

Title:  Saline water resources study
Location:  India
Client:  Confidential (international oil company)
Description:  WMC is undertaking a detailed and comprehensive study of deep aquifers to develop a significant saline groundwater resource for reinjection to aid oil recovery. The study has involved data collection, exploration drilling and testing, the characterisation of several formations including detailed geophysical information, hydrogeological conceptualisation and numerical groundwater modelling. The studies include an assessment of the potential for impacts on shallow freshwater lenses of abstraction of deeper saline water, as part of an EIA submission.

Title:  Skyline Mine dewatering system design and cost analysis
Location:  Utah, USA
Client:  Canyon Fuel Company
Description:  WMC completed a preliminary engineering design and analysis for a dewatering system. The report included a conceptual design for the dewatering system, a capital and operating cost estimate including cost per acre-foot to support discussions with the local stakeholders.

Title:  Mine hydrogeology and saline water disposal
Location:  Poland
Client:  International Economic and Energy Consultants Ltd
Description:  The Polish hard coal industry is undergoing restructuring and privatisation assisted by the World Bank and European Union. WMC provided hydrogeology and desalination expertise to the study team. The existing situation was evaluated with respect to mine hydrogeology and disposal of saline water from the mines.

Title:  Landfill closure plan
Location:  Nevada, USA
Client:  Sierra Pacific Power Company
Description:  WMC completed a detailed analysis of the hydrogeologic conditions beneath the North Valmy Plant landfill. The report information was used to support the closure plan for state approval.
