WMC has conducted projects to design and implement remedial measures at contaminated sites. Since groundwater flow and transport is a key mechanism for the spread of contamination at many sites, we initially focus on understanding contaminant sources and pathways. This allows the development of effective remedial actions to remediate problems in a cost-effective manner.
WMC has worked on a variety of remedial actions for industrial sites, mining sites and other locations where groundwater contamination is a problem. We utilize sophisticated groundwater flow and contaminant transport models to evaluate the hydrogeological regime and select effective remedial actions. The outbreak of Foot & Mouth Disease in 2001 resulted in the rapid culling of several million farm animals in the UK. WMC was commissioned to provide a team of engineers, scientists and project managers to deliver a viable system of pollution containment at the largest carcass disposal site in the country, in Cumbria. Services provided included detailed engineering designs, and supervision of installation, for an environmental containment system which included a deep groundwater cut-off curtain, groundwater interceptor drains, leachate collection and treatment facilities, and gas venting installations. WMC also organised licences to abstract, treat and dispose of groundwater and effluents, and supervised the site restoration and construction of a nature reserve.
